MoFo Day 26: Ella’s Wood Fired Pizza
We went to see Ani DiFranco perform at 6th & I tonight, so we decided to meet up for dinner at Ella’s Wood Fired Pizza, which has several vegan options, including lightly applied vegan cheese. I suspect it’s Daiya, which I like, but I do appreciate a light hand with it. We started off with a spinach, strawberry, and candied almond salad, which was sprinkled with coarse sugar. It sounds weird, but it was actually really good! Read More Share: Read More

MoFo Day 20: Tom Yum Takeout
I was feeling a bit awful today, spent most of the day today sleeping on the sofa, and wasn’t going to post, but I’ ve come so far and didn’t want to break my streak. I was so happy that Carl brought home this Tom Yum from En Bistro. I asked several servers, several times if the vegetarian version has any fish sauce, chicken brother, shrimp paste, or anything else that isn’t vegan, and have been assured that it is safe. I’m glad because it sure is... Read More
MoFo Day 16: Sunday Brunch
Carl and I enjoyed a lovely, relaxed brunch this morning at our favorite local vegan restaurant, Great Sage. We started with a bowl of smoky black bean soup. Then, I ordered the breakfast burrito, which is filled with tofu scramble, roasted potatoes, tempeh bacon, and a spicy sauce. It comes with a side of vegetables, and today they were serving quickly sauteed zucchini, chard, and tomatoes. I could only eat half the burrito, so I’ll have a great breakfast tomorrow, too. ... Vegan MoFo Day 2: DC Vegan Baking Swap
Once a month, the DC Vegan Baking Swap gathers, usually in a cafe downtown, to exchange treats. I recently started joining in on the fun. A different baking source is selected each month, and October’s book was Quick and Easy Vegan Bake Sale by Carla Kelly. I didn’t have this book yet, so I had to buy it for “research purposes”. I made the Raspberry Clafouti Tart. I baked a vegan clafoutis recently, and this one was a tad more cakey than custardy, but it... Read More
Apple Cake and Farm Sanctuary
I kind of failed at MoFo this year. I actually started this post during MoFo. Next year I will definitely plan ahead of time. It kind of snuck up on me, along with a crazy work schedule and travel, and I just fell behind on posting and reading. I did post more than last year, though, and I also posted a bit over here. I discovered and rediscovered a lot of amazing blogs, and will have reading material and ideas for years! I do hope I can also continue to post once a week or... Read More
Vegan MoFo : Day 8 : Madras Palace
Yesterday afternoon, I had the rare treat of meeting up with my husband for lunch. One of his clients canceled, so he didn’t have to go in until later in the afternoon. I’m always looking for something new to try out, so I checked out vegdc.com and found Madras Palace, a vegetarian Indian restaurant with a lunch buffet. Carl got there a few minutes before me, so asked our server to show him the vegan options. There was actually quite a bit to choose from. I would have... Read More
Vegan MoFo : Day 6 : Vegetable Garden
Saturday afternoon, my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, nephew (although at only six weeks old, he didn’t eat much), and I went to Vegetable Garden for a little belated birthday celebration. Located in a strip mall near White Flint Metro in Rockville, MD, Vegetable Garden has been open for nearly a decade. I believe their menu is completely vegan, and most of the food is Asian. There are lots of combinations I’ve never seen on other Chinese-American menus, though. There... Read More
Vegan MoFo : Day 5 – Almaz with Friends
Just a quick post. I haven’t gone to bed yet, so it’s technically still Friday night, right? Tonight I had dinner at Almaz, an Ethiopian restaurant in DC with lots of vegan options. The dinner was in honor of some friends who were in town from San Francisco, and it was a good opportunity to see other friends I haven’t seen in a while. The first time I had Ethiopian, I didn’t really like it, so it was years before I tried it again. I’ll have to thank... Read More
Vegan Mofo – Vegan Night – Brookland Cafe
More and more restaurants in the DC area are offering vegan options as part of their regular menu. Brookland Cafe is now hosting a vegan night every Wednesday from 4pm – 11pm. One of the chefs comes from Soul Veg, another great place to eat. Brookland Cafe is conveniently located a few blocks from the Brookland/CUA station on the red line, so a friend and I decided to meet up and try it out. The cafe is tucked in a residential neighborhood, and is a cute place with colorful... Read More
